2008 National Philanthropy Day Award Honorees:

William M. & Virginia B. Spencer Outstanding Philanthropist – Eleanor M. Kidd.  From gala gatherings to benefit St. Vincent's Hospital, Birmingham-Southern College and the Birmingham Museum of Art to leadership gifts at St. Vincent's and UAB, Eleanor M. Kidd has made her mark as an ardent supporter of arts, education and medicine in Birmingham.  Her financial gifts have often been among the first, inspiring others to join in support of charitable causes, while her unique and elegant touch as a hostess has guaranteed success for so many fundraising events over the years.

Outstanding Civic Leader – Edward M. (Eddie) Friend III.  Eddie Friend follows the philosophy of his father, Gen. Edward M. Friend Jr., a previous winner of the Civic Leader Award, who believed that true happiness came from helping others. A longtime supporter of Big Brothers-Big Sisters and the only 2-term chair of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, Friend has made significant contributions to many civic and charitable organizations, including United Way of Central Alabama and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, where he currently serves as Board Chair and the 50th Anniversary Campaign Chair.

Outstanding Corporate Citizen Thompson Tractor.  As the Caterpillar dealer for the state of Alabama, Thompson Tractor sets a high standard for excellence in its service to its customers as well as its philanthropic commitment.  Employees are encouraged to give both time and money to charity, leading to United Way contributions that have almost doubled over the past five years.  The company lends equipment and employees to assist organizations such as the Birmingham Zoo and Mountain Brook City Schools and uses its own Foundation to honor employees with gifts to charity.

Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy – Matthew Chapman.  Matthew Chapman is a young man with a mission who uses his personal passion and style to make a difference in causes that really count.  Whether he’s asking for a dollar-a-mile sponsorship in a charity road race or organizing a backyard barbecue fundraiser, he provides an example to his peers of how philanthropy can be accessible and fun.  As a member of the steering committee of the Young Leaders Society of United Way of Central Alabama, he inspires young adults to give and to get involved.

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham Outstanding Professional Advisor – Judith F. Todd.  Working with people in the specialty of estates and trust law has given Judy Todd the opportunity to serve others, helping them plan for their own future as well as the future of the charitable organizations they love. She takes her own charitable commitments seriously as well, helping the YWCA set up its endowment, serving on the first board of The Women's Fund of Greater Birmingham and advising in the creation of the Professional Advisors Committee of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.

Outstanding Charitable OrganizationThe Service Guild of Birmingham.  More than 600 children throughout central Alabama have received important early intervention services from the Bell Center, established and support by the Service Guild of Birmingham. From leadership in a capital campaign to volunteer hours working directly with special-needs children, Service Guild members show the power of working together, focusing on a critical need and finding a solution. Year after year, the Service Guild provides much needed support for this important program, which today serves more than 110 children at a time..
